A dual fuel range is really two appliances sharing a frame. The top is gas, with all the small mechanical things that gas brings: ports that block, igniters that weaken, caps that get seated a fraction out of true after a clean. The oven underneath is electric, and its problems are electrical and thermal instead: an element that has opened up, a sensor that is reading a few degrees off, a control board that took a hit during one of the storms we get here through the summer.

That split matters when you call, because the first thing we want to know is which half of the range is misbehaving. A burner that will not light and an oven that will not hold temperature almost never share a cause, and treating them as one problem is how people end up paying twice.

When the top will not light

The most common version of this is a single burner clicking away while its neighbours light normally. That points at the burner itself rather than at the supply, and it is usually one of three things: a port blocked by something that boiled over, a cap sitting slightly proud of its seat, or an igniter that has lost enough of its spark to fail on a cold morning and work fine by noon.

If every burner clicks and none of them catch, the question moves upstream to the supply, and that is a different conversation. We check pressure at the appliance rather than taking the meter’s word for it.

When the oven runs cold

An oven that used to reach temperature in twelve minutes and now takes twenty is telling you something specific. Either it is producing less heat than it used to, or it is losing heat faster than it used to, and the two feel identical from the kitchen.

We measure the cavity against what the control is calling for, which settles it quickly. A door seal that has gone hard and flat will let heat out at a corner you can find with the back of your hand. An element that has partly failed will still glow and still feel hot and still be doing less work than it should.

Two supplies, two sets of symptoms

Because the halves are fuelled differently, they also fail differently when the services behind them are inadequate, and the symptoms are easy to tell apart once you know to listen for them.

A gas problem shows itself under load. Everything is fine with two burners going and a large range gets starved when the oven, if it is a gas oven elsewhere in the house, and three or four burners are all asking at once. On a dual fuel range the giveaway is that the top misbehaves only when the top is busy, and the oven is entirely unaffected because it is not drinking from the same pipe.

An electrical problem shows itself as an interruption rather than a weakening. The oven resets. The clock comes back at midnight. The display goes blank for a moment and returns. That pattern points at the circuit, and in a great many Mandarin kitchens the range circuit was added at some point after the house was built rather than run properly from the panel at first fix. A range sharing a circuit with something else in the kitchen will behave impeccably for weeks and then misbehave the moment the other appliance starts.

Neither of those is a fault in the range, and neither is curable with a part. We would rather find them on the first visit and say so plainly.

Mandarin’s particular version of this

Many Mandarin kitchens were built before ranges of this size were common, so the range went in as a retrofit. Where the cabinet opening was widened to make room, the range sometimes sits with less clearance on one side than the other, and over years that shows up as a door that closes true on one side and not the other. It is worth checking the install before condemning a hinge.

Tight clearance has a second consequence that is easier to miss. A range packed into an opening cut to its exact body width has nowhere to send the heat that rises off the back of it, and electronics that sit at a higher temperature all day fail sooner than electronics that do not. When we see a control fail twice in the same appliance, the opening is the first thing we measure.
